Hong Kong was originally a collection of small fis Hong Kong was originally a collection of small fishing villages under Qing dynasty rule before being ceded to the United Kingdom in 1842 after the First Opium War. Britain later expanded the colony to include Kowloon and the New Territories under long-term lease agreements. During World War II, Hong Kong was occupied by the Empire of Japan from 1941 to 1945, a period marked by hardship and population decline.
