The Birdman cult emerged after the era of moai building and became the island’s most important religious tradition. Each year, rival clans chose a champion to climb down the cliffs at Orongo, swim to the islet of Motu Nui, and retrieve the first sooty tern egg of the season. The first to return with an unbroken egg won the competition, but the title of Birdman was awarded not to the swimmer, but to the clan leader who sponsored him. For the following year, he became a sacred figure believed to have the blessing of the creator god Makemake, bringing prestige and influence to his clan. Interestingly, archaeologists believe the ritual may originally have centered on frigatebirds before later shifting to sooty terns as the island’s bird populations changed.

Rapa Nui, better known as Easter Island, is one of the world’s most isolated inhabited places, with the nearest inhabited island more than 2,000 km away and mainland Chile about 3,700 km to the east. The island was formed by the merging of three extinct volcanoes and is home to nearly 1,000 moai statues, most of which were carved from volcanic tuff at the Rano Raraku quarry. Hundreds of these statues still remain there, abandoned in various stages of carving, offering a rare glimpse into how they were made. The largest unfinished moai would have measured around 21 metres and weighed well over 200 tonnes. Although often portrayed as giant heads, most moai have complete bodies that became buried over centuries by natural soil accumulation. Some were later topped with red stone pukao, carved from a separate quarry at Puna Pau.
