In Nepal, particularly in Tibetan Buddhist communi In Nepal, particularly in Tibetan Buddhist communities, it is common for young boys to join monasteries as novice monks. Boys may enter at a young age, sometimes between five and ten years old, but this is not a lifelong commitment, as full ordination is only possible in adulthood and many eventually return to secular life.

Families choose this path for a mix of religious, cultural, and practical reasons: it is considered spiritually meaningful, and monasteries often provide free education, food, housing, and basic healthcare, which can be especially important in remote or economically poor regions.

Daily life in a monastery combines religious practice with general schooling, and many monasteries today also teach modern subjects. While in the past the decision was often made mainly by families, contemporary monasteries in Nepal increasingly emphasize that joining should be voluntary and that boys are free to leave, alongside greater attention to child welfare and rights.
