One of the most fascinating things about Huayhuash

One of the most fascinating things about Huayhuash is how quickly the landscape changes with altitude. Within a few hours, you can go from green valleys and grazing llamas to completely barren terrain above 5,000 metres, where almost nothing grows. The high passes often feel like another planet, with glaciers, volcanic-looking rocks and frozen lakes all around you. What makes it even more impressive is that many of these landscapes are shaped by ancient glacial movement, the huge U-shaped valleys and chains of turquoise lakes are essentially the fingerprints of glaciers that have been retreating for thousands of years.

The Huayhuash Circuit is one of the most spectacular high-altitude treks in the Peruvian Andes. The classic circuit covers roughly 110–130 km, depending on the route and side trips. The trail crosses several high passes, with elevations frequently above 4,500 m and some passes reaching around 5,000 m.

The trek passes beneath some of the Cordillera Huayhuash’s most impressive peaks, including Yerupajá (6,634 m), Peru’s second-highest mountain. Along the way you encounter glaciers, waterfalls, traditional mountain settlements and numerous spectacular lakes such as Carhuacocha, Mitucocha and Jahuacocha.

Vinicunca, or Rainbow Mountain, is one of Peru’s most spectacular natural landscapes, reaching about 5,036 m in the Andes. Its colorful stripes are created by different mineral-rich geological layers exposed by erosion. The El Tatio Geysers are one of the highlights of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile and one of the highest geothermal fields in the world, sitting at around 4,320 m above sea level. The best time to visit is just before sunrise, when the extreme temperature difference between the hot geothermal water and the freezing mountain air creates powerful columns of steam.

The area has dozens of geysers, fumaroles, hot springs and bubbling pools, surrounded by the stark volcanic landscape of the Andes.

The Santa Cruz Trek is one of the most spectacular multi-day hikes in Peru, crossing the heart of the Cordillera Blanca in the Andes. The trail passes turquoise glacial lakes, dramatic valleys and towering snow-capped peaks, with the highest point at Punta Unión Pass at around 4,750 m. Over roughly 65–70 km in 3 days, I experienced huge changes in altitude and landscapes, including views of peaks such as Alpamayo and Artesonraju.

Hidden in the Vilcabamba mountains, Choquequirao sits at around 3,050 m above the Apurímac River canyon. Getting there means descent of more than 1,500 m into the Apurímac Canyon, and the same climb back up.

The Inca complex was probably built in the 15th–16th centuries under the successors of Pachacútec and served as an important religious, administrative and agricultural centre on the edge of the Vilcabamba region. It includes plazas, temples, residences, water channels and an enormous system of agricultural terraces.

One of its most unusual features is the series of white stone llama figures embedded into the terraces, known as the “Llamas of the Sun.” And despite its size, only part of the archaeological complex has been excavated and restored.
