Guangzhou, historically called Canton, was at the center of the First Opium War because it was China’s main trading port with the West. In 1839, the Qing official Lin Zexu cracked down on the illegal opium trade there by seizing and destroying large British opium supplies, which escalated tensions into open war. British forces then attacked key coastal areas, including around Guangzhou, to force China to reopen trade. After China’s defeat, the Treaty of Nanking was signed, ending Canton’s exclusive role in foreign trade and opening several other ports to Western powers.
